In 1955, he changed his name to Henry Kjærnulf but is widely known by his artist name, Henning Kjærnulf.
About The Chairs
Henning Kjaernulf’s oak “razorblade” chairs are among his most distinctive designs. This set was manufactured by the Danish company EG Kvalitetsmöbel in the 1960s, making it a true Danish mid-century set. It is easy to see where the nickname of these chairs stems from.
The slightly curved backrests are razorblade-shaped, an unparalleled design feature. These dining chairs have three “blades” opposed to the single and two-blade models, which makes them quite rare. Thanks to the multiple blades which elongate the back, the design is visually stimulating, featuring both angular and rounded shapes. The style and shape of the carved legs and frame recall an almost Baroque design, which is paired with Scandinavian modernism, an uncommon yet impressive combination that Kjærnulf was a master of. The scalloped pattern is also featured on the seats’ apron in the front, and to let them stand out, there are no stretchers on the front sides.
On all other sides, there are straight wooden stretchers that provide ample stability, and balance the curved shapes with straighter ones.
Danish mid-century designer and architect, Henning Kjaernulf remains somewhat enigmatic, with more known about his designs than the man himself. His wooden designs, primarily for Danish manufacturers EG Kvalitetsmöbel, Nyrup Møbelfabrik, and Vejle Stole Møbelfabrik, speak for themselves.
Notably, Vejle Stole Møbelfabrik produced Kjaernulf’s renowned teak extending dining table. Historical records from the Danish municipality of Stenlille mention Kjaernulf’s architectural designs for Nyrup Møbelfabrik’s factory, referring to him as an architect based in Odense, Denmark.
Kjaernulf’s works reveal quality craftsmanship throughout, featuring clean Danish modern era lines with sculpted edges and shapes. The unique shapes, like his razorblade chair backrests, distinguish the designer from other Danish mid-century designers. Despite the high demand for his dining sets and lounge chairs, the mystery surrounding Kjaernulf adds to the charm of his pieces.
The natural grain and color of the oak is complemented by the light fabric of the seats. Despite being made from a premium material, the fabric is understated, letting the frames stay in focus. This was his style and we will preserve as much of his unique color and finish touch with our PreOwned collections. The color complements the blonde oak and adds a modernistic touch. With a commitment to combine tradition and modernity, Henning Kjærnulf’s present set is an immediately recognizable and a timeless classic.
